How was
Newfoundland Affected?
The war had a huge impact on
Newfoundland. Prices had risen sharply for
everyday needs, like fish, lumber, news print and other
materials. Young and old men were sent out to war to fight for
the freedom of their country, leaving many families in
sorrow.
The men were all
gone to fight for the cause and that left the
women assume the role of the man. The war gave females
more freedom than what they had before, and if it wasn't for
the war who knows, maybe we wouldn't have the right to vote
today! War also created a demand for more jobs in
many areas, including child care, health care, industry,
and factory workers. These jobs were
previously restricted to men, but now the women were
employed in their place.
During the post war era the
factories that previously manufactured supplies for the
war, started to make new products like cars and home
appliances. More people could afford to buy these
items, but why would you need thousands of washers made
annually, when you don't have the population
to fill the need. No one thought of this problem and
factories and the government suffered financially. At
the end of the war Newfoundland owed Britain more then
$35 million dollars.

fight in the war.
