Royal Newfoundland Regiment
Over the course of 200 years the regiment
has come to represent Newfoundland's proud military heritage.
Few other military organwas formed in 1795 and can look back
with pride on a record of service, which included the war of
1812, the Gallipoli and Worlizations in North America are
older then the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This Regiment d
War One as well as some recent United Nations
assignments.
The Regiment
is unique in many different ways!!
-it was the
only Regiment on order of the battle for the Dominion of
Newfoundland
-shortly
after Newfoundland joined the Canadian Confederation the
Regiment was revived as a unit in the Canadian Army (Reserve)
-the
regiment is the only infantry unit of the Canadian army to be
stationed in the province of Newfoundland
-It was the only Colonial Regiment to
receive the prefix “Royal”
-The Regiment
was the first Canadian regiment to receive the Queen’s and
Regimental Colours.
-This Regiment
lasted until 1783 under the title of H.M. Newfoundland
Regiment of Foot.
-Again in
1795 a Regiment was embodied entitled The Royal Newfoundland
Regiment of Fencible Infantry and played a prominent part
during the War of 1812.
The
connection between the people of Newfoundland and the
regiment has been long and close. Most Newfoundlanders can
point to a relative who has or is serving in the Royal
Newfoundland Regiment. This Regiment is more then just part of
the Canadian army, it is part of the people and their
history here in Newfoundland. To this day we still fight proud
and strong!!
